We demand a lot from our kitchens. This most popular room should be both a highly functional culinary center and a cozy place to relax. Use the following ideas to make your kitchen feel more spacious and lively.
Most kitchens are cluttered with pounds of unnecessary utensils, dishes, canned goods, and cereals. How often do you use the waffle iron? Is there a use for the dessert plates that your coworkers gave you for your birthday? What about those tins in the corner of the refrigerator? Will they ever become your lunch? Get rid of all the unnecessary things!
Follow the French rule of mise en place (“everything in its place”), and then you will not have to search for the right thing every time.
Keep everything in sight and within arm’s reach. You should not arrange archaeological excavations to reach your favorite ladle. Hang pots and pans on hooks, kitchen utensils on a metal string, keep knives on a special stand (so they don’t touch and don’t get dull).
Lids are always lost. Give them a special place by grouping them, and you’ll always know where they are.
Create kitchen zones. Just as salespeople group products by theme, you should also allocate zones in the kitchen for preparing coffee, food, etc.
Trays can be used throughout the house, but they look best near the sink and stove. They are very practical (they are portable and easy to clean) and aesthetic (simple objects grouped on a tray turn into a still life in the style of the painter Giorgio Morandi).
