A new report from Airports Council International (ACI) has named Samarkand Airport the fastest growing airport in Europe and Central Asia. Over the past five years, the airport’s passenger traffic has increased by 186%.
Samarkand International Airport has benefited from major public-private investment through a partnership between entrepreneur Bakhtiyor Fazilov and the Government of Uzbekistan. The expanded and modernized terminal, which opened in 2022, has significantly increased the airport’s passenger traffic.
Not only has Samarkand Airport grown by a record 186% over the past five years, but it also served 1.38 million passengers last year, up 36.6% from 2023.
In 2024, the airport’s takeoff and landing operations increased by 23% to 11,000 arrivals and departures.
Samarkand International Airport currently serves 23 international and three domestic destinations, including the most popular routes to Abu Dhabi, Istanbul, Jeddah, Moscow and St. Petersburg. Several new destinations were added in 2024, including Xi’an (China), Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt), Turkestan (Kazakhstan) and the Russian cities of Tyumen, Nizhny Novgorod and Irkutsk.
